I enjoyed Audre Lorde's piece, "The Master's Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master's House," because I think her basic point, while seemingly obvious, is not often discussed. As Lorde puts it, "What does it mean when the tools of a racist patriarchy are used to examine the fruits of that same patriarchy? It means that only the most narrow perimeters of change are possible and allowable." Lorde seems to be advocating that, as feminists, we must work outside and not within the system to affect meaningful change. How, though, should we go about this? Is she advocating a complete overthrow of the system? Destruction of the state as we know it in order to rebuild society? What are the alternate tools that we can use to build our own house?
