In lecture on Tuesday professor Tadiar discussed domestic work. She stated that 95 percent of caretakers in NYC are women and close to 99 percent are foreign. A phrase that resonated with me most was "the globalization of domestic work/social reproduction". Not only is there a gender division in domestic work but also a racial division. Ehrenreich discusses a slogan from "Merry Maids" saying "we scrub your floors the old fashioned way, on our hands and knees". She later goes on to discuss how this custom is considered degrading by opposing companies and independent cleaners however, it has become a marketing tool for others. How has our society allowed these customs? Is it an issue or morals or personal choice? Who is to say who should raise your children--how do you control something that is perfectly legal and a personal decision?
